If a prize falls in the forest . . .

Tomorrow is Honors Day at Hamline University. Classes are cancelled, and a variety of events recognize the year's achievers: poster/paper presentations at a scholarship fair, an honors art exhibit, an honors recital, and the academic honors convocation. I was asked a few weeks ago to be one of the ten students to play in the honors recital. So when Eric received a letter last week saying that I had won an award and that he should plan on joining me at the convocation and lunch following, I assured him it was simply because I was playing in the recital and so my name was probably listed in the convocation program or something lame like that.

Wrong. Turns out, I find out today, I'm receiving at least two awards, at least one of which involves a cash prize. The super big bummer is that because I have to play at a funeral tomorrow at the exact same time as the convocation, I won't be there to receive any kind of glory at all. I'm so disappointed! There will be applause, and I will miss it. There will be robed faculty, and I will not stand in front of them. There will be some pomp, some circumstance, while I'll be at the organ playing In the Garden.

I will report back when I know the details of my prizes. For now, I'm all dressed up with no place to go.

Oh, how sweet your reward will be in heaven.

But the cash sure is useful down here.

I say the Going40 readers should accept the awards on your behalf. They like you! They really, really like you!

Told you.

Are you kidding?! Picture the scene: "Mr. Scott Rohr is the winner of not only the Super-Duper Great Guy Award, but also the Most Awe-Inspiring Student of All Time Award. Mr. Rohr is unable to accept these awards in person today, because he is currently using his stupendous musical talents to console a grieving family at the funeral of their loved one."

You'll get so many martyr points that you won't even need to run in the marathon.

P.S. Congratulations!

Congrats! Are we, your readers, surprised? Of course not!!

Oh, and Stephanie's right. That looks really really good. I think it's kind of like buying some carbon offsets. You can do some really bad stuff now and still come out ahead.

So, for the cash prize, do you have to be present to win? If you're not there, do they draw another name out of the hat?

So sorry. It's fun to get some applause, and I think they never ever applaud at funerals, even for really good music.

Remember how you were nervous to re-enter the world of academia? Wow, how times change. Congratulations on all the accolades, Scott. They're well deserved!

Oh, and BTW, remember that funerals PAY. Awards ceremonies do not. :-)

So what's the word, hummingbird? We're all on pins and needles to hear about the day!
