Brave New World

With finals week behind me, I find myself this Monday morning needing a new routine. No reason to go to Hamline, no reason to leave the house, really (except the cleaner is there right now and I don't like being there when he's there; makes me feel too Lord of the Manor). So I'm at the coffee house, feeling very much of a type: The Freelancer. I have plenty of work to keep me busy this week, and am looking forward to it. I am still feeling slightly guilty about not studying, but that feeling should go away in the next few days (though I intend to begin my German review later this week).

Eric needed a ride to work this morning, and I found myself very uptight about deadlines and my schedule. Now that I'm sitting here, sipping my au lait, my work spread out in front of me (with no pressing deadline), I wonder how long it's going to take me to realize that, for the first time in months (years?), I have it All Under Control. This too shall pass.

Go run. Trust me on this: you want to have a good base of regular running before you start your marathon training plan. I did 20 miles yesterday and I think it would have hurt less if I would have had a more consistent base.

Happy All Under Control day! ;)

I'm so glad you feel like you have it all under control.

It's such a sweet illusion, isn't it?

Thanks, Tom. I actually meant to mention the running. I am getting aback to running. I did four days last week, and will aim for five this week. You're right about that base; besides need to drop a bunch of weight so that I'm not carrying around the equivalent of a backback loaded with textbooks.

Here's my story about having it all under control and hanging out at a coffee shop.

Scene: Cafe Wyrd
Time: 1991. A spring afternoon
Players: Eric M, who was having a great day, and sitting at the coffee shop by himself. Unknown Cute Guy.

The action: Eric M is having a great day. He's not working today, and has run on a number of errands, all of them successful. He is enjoying a hibiscus iced tea while reading the paper.

Unknown Cute Guy gets up and hovers near where Eric M is sitting. He slyly puts a note on the corner of the table and quickly walks away.

A ? appears over Eric M's head as he reaches for the paper. Is it UCG's phone number? A lurid proposal? "There are so many possibilities," Eric M thinks to himself.

The note is written on the torn corner of a ruled notebook. It is folded in half. When Eric M opens the note he sees two words written in pencil:

"Your zipper."

And sure enough, Eric M looks down and sees that his fly is wide open.

Moral: Enjoy the feeling of having things under control as long as possible. And also check your fly every now and then.
