Deb and Phil are cavorting in Portland this weekend, and Deb is keeping me abreast of their goings-on via iPhone photos. A road race is happening this evening right outside their swanky hotel. This here (kind of blurry, Deb) is SuperSperm.

I'm sorry about the blurry. The children in front of me were impinging on my lazy photo-taking. And the runners were running past and it was evening so not a fast shot.
The Portland Starlight Run is part of the Rose Festival. It's a 3-mile funrun. Lots of the runners dress up in funny clothes. SuperSperm actually ran in a padded suit. You can't really see the big head with no neck in the picture.
After the run there was a parade that lasted about three hours. Floats and a lot of really good marching bands. On your behalf, I watched all the drum major conductors to see how they lead the band. I think you'll be able to incorporate a running start and a high leap on beat one into choir routines.
Portland is cool.
