Quilty

Prince Maurice, lying in state, Adriaen Pietersz van de Venne, 1625
Thanks for all your oohs and aahs over said quilt; the quilt, and my dad, totally deserve it. Phil suggests that perhaps it's not a new quilt at all, and includes the evidence pictured above. And Dad provides the following about the pattern and inspiration:

The pattern is mostly my own, but I did use ideas from other quilters. The triangles of stripes are inspired by Kaffe Fassett. He has published many books of quilting, and you may know him for his work in knitting before he got started in quilting. His philosophy for quilting is

  • Ignore all the rules
  • Enjoy real color
  • If something is worth doing, it is worth overdoing.

I resonate with those. He designs lots of fabric which I love. The company through which he works is Rowan. The quilt that does this stripey thing is called Mossy Radiation and is from his book Quilt Road which was published in 2005.

The swirly blocks are made with some templates that I bought several years ago, but hadn't tried out until the final border of the men's round robin in which I was involved last year. Those templates were done by Cara Gulati for Doodle Press. They are fun to do, and I have used them several times since that first attempt, but have set them aside after your quilt, because I'm temporarily sick of them. That probably won't last long.

Why am I not surprised that he essentially designed that quilt himself?

Question: who gets the fabulous quilt if you die? Not that we'll let that influence how we vote on the Marathon issue or anything.

P.S. Confidential to Deb: rumor has it that every new computer offers a new voting opportunity (at least if you're not logged in to Google). At home, at work, at a friend's house, at every cybercafé between home and work and friends' houses. Of course, I wouldn't know anything about this personally. France had absolutely nothing to do with Scooter ending up in the British Orphan's Lit class!

Your Dad is obviously a very talented quilter - does he have a blog of his quilting? A flickr page? It would be great to see his other works.
